Koh Tao

Well, gotta tell you that the excitement about Tanote bay was over the top. The place sucks if you are not diving there. The accomodation that I stayed at was having generator issues and the electricity kept switching on and off. The beach is full of rocks (not Afrikaaners) so entry into the water made snorkelling difficult. Checked in at 4pm and and checked out at 7:45 am. Oh well.

I am now staying at Queen resort at Laem Jo Po Ro, which is where I stayed in Koh Tao 11 years ago. The place has undergone so much change, it is blowing me away. Last time I was here, there were a handfull of restaurants and shops in the main town. There are now 7 elevens and about 60 dive shops. It has really been spoiled since I was last here, and is now primarily an island for divers. I will post some pics before I leave here for the benefit of those that have visited the island before.

It is really noticeable that there are very few Aussies and Kiwis around due to the travel warnings - all other nationalities, including the Thais are somewhat bemused by this. I have met one Aussie and one Kiwi, and the rest are pretty much German or English.

More updates later.....

Photos so far. Koh Samui and Koh Phangan

It is really gonna hurt to leave Thong Nai Pan, so I guess that I am leaving at the right time.
I am staying at 'Star Huts', who deserve a plug. See more reviews at

The place is really filling up in anticipation of the full moon party. A mob of about 180 German tourists are expected to arrive on the 1st April (Full moon party is on the 2nd). I have seen the bungalow operators turn back a number of potential clients because they are fully booked.

I am off to Koh Tao and will be staying in Ao Tanoad (Tanote bay) at the Black Tip dive resort http://blacktipdiving.com. The resort is named as such due to the number of black tip sharks in the bay. Should make for great snorkelling. I was last in Koh Tao 11 years ago, so expect that it will be a totally different place.

I went scuba diving yesterday for the first time in about 10 years, and it was fantastic. I swam through a school of over 100 trevally and also a large number of barracuda. I saw a blue spotted stingray and made the dive instructor promise to not tell it that I was an Australian. Also saw a whole lot of other stuff that I can not remember the names of. Would you believe that the water was a lazy 29 degrees - wow !

Here are some pics of the trip so far..

Main road in Koh Samui - note the Starbucks. (there is also a bowling alley would you believe?)

I had to take a part time job to pay for the holiday :)

Paradise found

I first spent 2 nights in Koh Samui. After 2 days of constant harrasment from taxi drivers, copy-watch vendors and all sorts of other street touts, I was happy to leave.

The beaches there are great, but the main beach Chaweng is way too hectic for my likings. I am now reconsidering whether or not to bother spending another night there before I fly out and will probably travel to Samui on the day of my flight.

I arrived on Koh Phangan island yesterday, which is a 30 minute ride from Samui by Catamaran. What a place.

I am staying on a magnificent palm tree lined beach at the foot of the mountains called Thong Nai Pan Noi.

I am definitely giving the beaches a work over.

There are a number of stray dogs that roam the island, that are incredibly docile most of the time - they just lie on the beach and sleep. I now know where the saying 'its a dogs life' comes from, and it is not all bad. On a downside, I was walking along the beach after dark last night and got 'attacked' a pack of about 6 of them. Pretty damn terrifying, but I managed to get them to leave me alone without getting bitten.

Let me tell you, there are not too many experiences better in this world then swimming in a bath warm ocean on your own. I plan to do a lot more of this in the coming days.

New beginnings... ... .. .

After years of working at the same place, I have decided that 'enuf is enuf' !!

I have packed in the job and will be travelling around Thailand and Vietnam for about 4.5 weeks before returning home to find a new career.

I have planned to go to a few specific regions, but have not committed to going anywhere in particular.

I was thinking of maybe going here....

Call me indecisive, but I am not convinced that I will find the idyllic conditions that I am after there, so I may just go here also....

In between drinking fruit shakes on magnificent beaches, I will be adventuring in Vietnam and will probably stop off over here...

4 days to go and counting down..................sure beats work !
